Kalamata Olives

We keep our Kalamata Olives as stripped back and simple as possible, using only the faintest drizzle of rapeseed oil and a tiny splash of lemon juice. The rapeseed oil we use in all our olive flavours is from a local farm called Bell & Loxton in South Devon and our Kalamata olives are no exception.

Characteristics of Kalamata Olives:

If you’re looking for a meaty olive with a smooth salty flavour, Kalamata olives may tick your boxes. These olives are officially black olives, however they’re actually more of a deep purple in colour. We’ve really tried not to tamper with this olive at all, hence why we’ve left the stone (pit) in the olive. We find that in this instance, the pit allows for a fuller, more rounded flavour. There’s a reason Kalamata olives are widely regarded as the king of table olives.

Where are Kalamata Olives grown?

Kalamata olives are grown very close to the city of Kalamata (hence the name), which is located in the Southern Peloponnese region in Greece. Although this breed of olive is grown all over the world, it cannot legally be called a Kalamata olive unless it’s grown in this specific region in Greece, authentic or what! These little black olives are traditionally harvested in November and December by hand so as to not bruise the olive. Kalamata Olives have been harvested in this region in Greece for thousands of years, as far back as the ancient Romans.
